Greened Spaces | Introduction

Greened Spaces

When I started my architectural design firm, Sprout Studios, I thought that cottage country was the perfect place to start promoting unique green designs. I assumed that within a few years, most cottagers building new would want green and off grid environmentally friendly homes to go with their natural surroundings – I was wrong. With each new client I meet I promote green alternatives and very few have any interest. So, given the opportunity to preach green design and building, it is my hope, that I can get the word out and help inform people who are considering going green, or maybe just want to learn more about it.

So what gives me the right to preach about green buildings? Nothing really, but I am passionate about environmental design. I was formally trained as an architect at Ryerson University where I found myself fascinated by the teachings of sustainable and solar passive design, alternative building materials and energies, grey water and rain water collection systems and all things environmentally friendly. My thesis was disaster relief housing where the walls were made of earth filled burlap sacks and the roof folded cardboard rafters….it is still slowly biodegrading in a field in Tottenham as I type.... The point is, I have a pretty in-depth knowledge of sustainable design and green building practices which I am more than happy to share with anyone who will listen. Am I the worlds leading authority on the topic? Not a chance, but odds are if you have a question that I can’t answer I can point you to someone who can.
